Everyone starts somewhere in Social Media.  Tips and tricks we’ve all learned along the way can be especially helpful to those still navigating uncharted waters.

This interview series features twitter accounts in and around the construction industry, a growing population within the Twittersphere.  My only disclaimer is that I do not always agree with the advice.

Questions:

1. When did you start your twitter account?

Wednesday, March 17, 2010.

2. What was your biggest obstacle in twitter?

Understanding all the hashtags and how they worked.

3. How often do you tweet? Do you have a schedule?

I try to interact with my followers daily. I write (blogs) three times per week and will share that content an average of four times on the day the post is published.

4. What is your recommendation to new people on twitter?

Follow other experienced twitter users and read everything they have to say about using twitter. (See the answer to #6 as I answer this question better down there).

5. What is your favorite hashtag and why.

#letsblogoff

This is a bi-weekly writing group where the subject is determined at letsblogoff.com. One of the best things you can do as a blogger is to get involved in a writing group. Learning how to write subject matter based on the direction of someone else is a great way to develop your writing ability and grow your content.

6. Did you have a twitter mentor? How did that come about?

It was @pastdue that got me started using twitter. I don’t believe that you can learn twitter from just one person. Each twitter user has his or her own style and strategy. You need to develop your own style and you can best do that by following a variety of other users. Follow people who actually engage with their audience. You will learn nothing from people who just dump their content in twitter and do not actually communicate through it.

7. Can you recommend a twitter account that we should be following?

I’ve become pretty good friends with @dogwalkblog. We actually see the world quite differently but we’ve managed to have fun disagreeing. We also enjoy a variety of things in common. This is a good account to follow if you want a balance of both content and random thoughts. Twitter is more than just promoting your own content. Mr. Dogg is good at creating an entertaining and educational experience for his followers.

Additional Comments:

During the last year I have really fallen in love with twitter over any other social media platform. I love the pace of the medium and, in many ways, I’ve found it to have the greatest variety of content compared to Facebook or LinkedIn.

With the character limitation that comes with twitter more of a direct approach to content sharing and overall interaction has resulted. One major point of uniqueness with Twitter is that it actually requires a little bit of strategy to master. You can’t just put up a video or interesting image and expect people to comment like with facebook or linkedin. Twitter is the simplest and most complex social medium out there.
