It Is Greener On the Other Side — In Irvine

Green Grass

Back in September last year The Orange County Register, in it’s article entitled “Irvine Overhauls Green Building Standards” by Sean Emery, broke the story that the City of Irvine has adopted California’s Green Building Standards, the first city in California to do so.  Furthermore, those State Standards which go into effect January 1, 2011, will be effective in the City of Irvine as of April 1, 2010 (see link to Resolution 09-99 below).

Irvine City Council, during their September 22, 2009 meeting, unanimously approved the early adoption of California’s Green Building Standards Code as well as resolving to dismiss it’s existing Irvine Build Green code to endorse third-party verification systems such as Green Point Rated (GPR) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

The early adoption of the 2008 CA Green Building Standards will be mandatory for residential building only; the section for commercial buildings remains voluntary at this time (see Page 4 of Green Building Program and Building Code Revisions from the September 22, 2009 meeting below).
