Construction Chat is a new chat hosted by us on Thursday mornings at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time. We’d love you to join if you’re free next week.
(I put a reminder in my calendar. Otherwise, even I would forget.)
This week’s topic:
This week we discussed technology and how it’s influenced design and construction. Below are the questions, as asked, and some highlighted answers.
The questions came from Kevin at Hard Hat Hub. Thanks for co-hosting, Kevin.
Q1. How has the use of technology increased at your company over the years?
@WindowWorksCA @RigginsConst A1 – We are not stuck at our desks as much and able to get out and get in the community #ConstChat
— Burgin Construction (@BurginCo) May 22, 2014
A1. Our technology is our window film~Prestige is 229 layers + thinner than a post-it. Still applied hands-on fashion. #ConstChat
— Window Works CA (@WindowWorksCA) May 22, 2014
A1: Technology is revolutionizing the building industry. Like most, we feel adapting is key and critical #ConstChat
— Mussachio Architects (@MussachioArch) May 22, 2014
We build 3D models of our designs, associate data with parts, then share with our owners/contractors to speed coordination #ConstChat
— David Butts (@dabutts7) May 22, 2014
A1: Increase in use of #technology to plan, measure & most importantly communicate #ConstChat
— Liftec Forklifts (@LiftecForklifts) May 22, 2014
Q2. How would you like to see technology used/leveraged by your firm?
A2. More photos to be shared on social media would be awesome, said the selfish Social Media Manager. 😀 #ConstChat

A2: The next step. Expanding our fully mobilized platforms. i.e. Taking your 'desktop' with you to the roof top. #ConstChat
— Mussachio Architects (@MussachioArch) May 22, 2014
A2 I would like more field employees to have smart phones with FaceTime/Skype for real time interaction. #constchat
— Paula Loht (@pjloht) May 22, 2014
A2: technology should be used in real time for better record keeping on projects and avoid disputes (see last week's chat) #constchat
— Soizic Reynal (@SoizicReynal) May 22, 2014
A2 here's an example of a job we did to support this https://t.co/1ingjliFgg #ConstChat

Q3. Do you have any ideas for how mobile apps could improve construction industry?
A3. If they ever come out with a Squeegee app, that would be awesome. #ConstChat
— Window Works CA (@WindowWorksCA) May 22, 2014
A3 Easy! Instagram for posting pics. 🙂 #ConstChat

Q4. Does your company use BIM or any 3D modeling to plan projects?
A4 No, but I'd love a 3D printer! #ConstChat
— Amy Donohue (@TheFabSocial) May 22, 2014
#ConstChat A4. Of the companies we work with, I would say almost half use BIM
— Hard Hat Hub (@hardhathub) May 22, 2014
A4 had three engineers sitting around a model working out equipment locations and clearances – fixing it along the way #ConstChat
— David Butts (@dabutts7) May 22, 2014
Q4a. Do you think construction drawings will ever not be paper? Why or why not?
A4a eventually, the majority will – there are cost benefits as well as environmental #ConstChat
— David Butts (@dabutts7) May 22, 2014
A4a. Why not replace paper with a screen, so long as people can interact with it somehow? Would require training. #ConstChat
— Window Works CA (@WindowWorksCA) May 22, 2014
#ConstChat – A4a – The cities still require paper, if they ever change that – we will be looking good
— Burgin Construction (@BurginCo) May 22, 2014
Q5. How will technology shape the construction industry in the next 5 years?
A5 as models become more refined, it's easier to run other apps that help with LEED compliance, energy calcs, etc. #ConstChat
— David Butts (@dabutts7) May 22, 2014
A5. Less waste in construction, in terms of hours needed, materials required, etc. #ConstChat
— Window Works CA (@WindowWorksCA) May 22, 2014
#Constchat A5. We imagine teams will be more flexible with talent, allowing employees to showcase talents on different projects
— Hard Hat Hub (@hardhathub) May 22, 2014
A5: Expect continued increase next 5 yrs of use of #technology to plan, drive down costs & enhance safety #ConstChat
— Liftec Forklifts (@LiftecForklifts) May 22, 2014
A5: It will be hard for those who don't embrace technology to stay in the game #ConstChat
