Everyone starts somewhere in Social Media.  Tips and tricks we’ve all learned along the way can be especially helpful to those still navigating uncharted waters.

This interview series features twitter accounts in and around the construction industry, a growing population within the Twittersphere.  My only disclaimer is that I do not always agree with the advice.

Questions:

1. When did you start your twitter account?

My first tweet was sometime in February 2010 as that was the official open date for the studio.

2. What was your biggest obstacle in twitter?

What to say and how to say it in 140 characters so anyone would want to follow me!

I thought Twitter was more for personal use, but quickly found out that there is a thriving professional community that is so supportive and inspiring.

3. How often do you tweet? Do you have a schedule?

I open Twitter first thing to respond to any RT’s or mentions right away. Then, I scan my “Lists” for interesting or educational tweets or links. I find that since a lot of the people I follow are on the East Coast I need an early start.

How many times I tweet is really dependent upon what is going on in my day or what inspires me for the day. Often, there is a great discussion that is happening on Twitter so I might tweet a lot in a short time. Continue reading

Space Invaders: An Office Manager Tip

I spent two weeks bussing tables at my mom’s work one summer and realized very quickly two things:

  1. All toddlers think Cheerios® are projectiles; and
  2. I needed to learn another trade.

In addition to the required typing class (is that still required or am I really dating myself?), I took two years of “Office Careers” and tutored it the third.  We learned everything from how to manually center text to how many hard returns should be between a date and the address on a letter from alphabetization rules for filing and how to use WordPerfect (now I know I’m dating myself).

The truth is, I have been doing this work since I was fourteen and, in 24 years’ worth of office experience, you pick up a few things including pet peeves.  Chalk it up to an occupational hazard.

I can’t even begin to recount how many documents I’ve had to edit or rewrite over the years where a seemingly simple task became daunting because of one culprit:  The Space Bar.

Seriously.  If you use the space bar to format documents in your word processing software, then I implore you to stop.  If setting tabs seems overwhelming to you, then may I suggest developing your skills at a computer learning center?  To this day, I am happy a former employer purchased blocks of classes for all of the staff to attend a few years back.

Once a few words are replaced the whole document becomes wonkey very quickly.  What was supposed to take five minutes now takes two hours and it seems that little green men from space have invaded your document and are holding it hostage to suck out your brain.  Okay, you can remove your tin hats now.

Aggregate

vocabularyIn social media, this term is used often to refer to RSS streams or twitter accounts that collect content from other sources and place them in one spot. Usually, you are required to click over to the original website to see the entire article, a convenient annoyance.

In construction, the term aggregate has a wide application of usage. I hate to admit that during a recent conversation with our superintendent, I referred to aggregate as “all the tiny shiny rocks and stuff.”  Yes, I am all girl. By no means is that an accurate or exhaustive definition. For that we turn to our faithful Red Dictionary.

According to the Construction Dictionary, 9th Edition © 2001 published by the Greater Phoenix, Arizona Chapter #98 of the National Association of Women in Construction reglet is defined as follows:

(1) An inert material used as a filler with cementitious material and water to produced plaster, concrete, etc.  The term used in conjunction with plaster usually implies sand, vermiculite, or perlite.

(2) In the case of materials of construction, essentially inert materials which when bound together into a conglomerated mass by a matrix form concrete mastic, mortar, or plaster; crushed rock or gravel screened to size for use in road surfaces, concrete or bituminous mixes; any of several hard materials such as sand gravel, stone, slag, cinders or other inert materials used for mixing with a cementing material to form concrete.  Aggregate, in a surface course in the building of roads, is often called road metal.

Questions:

1. When did you start your twitter account?

January 6, 2o09

2. What was your biggest obstacle in twitter?

As of late (last month or so), twitter.com has not been loading properly on my computer. Some pages don’t load all the way and I’m forced to log in every time I pull up the website, which is a major time sucker.

I was able to delete cookies and browser history to correct the problem. As with any technology, I guess it takes tweaking every now and then.

3. How often do you tweet? Do you have a schedule?

I tweet generally in chunks of time, depending on my day and what I need to accomplish. On a usual day, I’m on in the morning for about 15 to 30 minutes, again late morning, early afternoon, and before I leave for home. Often throughout the day it is for 5 minutes or just to take a break from paperwork. I rarely tweet on the weekends or in the evenings. Continue reading
