Lintel

vocabularyLintel, not to be confused with “a widely cultivated Eurasian annual leguminous plant” which is the lentil bean, is a structural term.

According to the Construction Dictionary, 9th Edition © 2001 published by the Greater Phoenix, Arizona Chapter #98 of the National Association of Women in Construction lintel is defined as follows:

(1) A piece of wood, stone or steel placed horizontally across the top of the door and window openings to support the walls immediately above the openings. (2) In steel work, the horizontal steel member spanning an opening to support the load above.

Where the legume may give your body the structural support it needs in the form of proteins, lintels give structural support to door and window openings–a small, subtle difference.

September 30, 2010

2. What was your biggest obstacle in twitter?

Getting to it.

How do you relax and recharge?

trees_origRest and relaxation are a gift from the industrial revolution forward.  Machines doing our work have helped us achieve more and work fewer hours.  I’m not sure the technology/mobile device revolution has helped us work less, but we surely do produce more.

I mean, who remembers using the card catalog at the library to research a paper in college and bringing a roll of dimes with you in case you had to print from microfiche? Google has all but eliminated that laborious chore.

Vacations are not my goal nor are they the source of relaxation because I find that I have to work extra hard to prepare for my absence only to find mounds of paperwork when I return.  My vacation is plagued by the background worry that I had forgotten to do this or that. Continue reading

Need to downsize? Project Profile: Ferrado Newport LLC

Ferrado Newport TIRiggins Construction & Management, Inc. is proud to announce the completion of the design-build, interior tenant improvements for Ferrado Newport LLC.

For a tenant, downsizing your space is always a great option when reducing your overhead costs, especially in the “new normal.” For the building owner, losing leasable space isn’t such a great option. We teamed up with their leasing agent, our architect, and the building owner, Ferrado Newport LLC, to design-build a leasable spec-suite in their six-story office building located near John Wayne Airport.

Often construction during business hours is considered an inconvenience; however, aside from the demolition and painting, we were able to complete our scope of work during normal business hours while interfacing with the facilities manager, building owner, and tenant’s employees. The tenant’s employees took it all in stride, even drawing landscapes and cartoons on their side of the ZipWall plastic dust barrier while we constructed a new, fire-rated demise wall. Their suite also received a new breakroom with upper and lower cabinetry, a 15” deep microwave shelf, room for a refrigerator, and we also installed their 42” flat screen TV.  We even painted their accent walls in corporate colors.

The newly created Suite 210 also received a new breakroom with upper and lower cabinetry, room for a refrigerator, and a 15” deep microwave shelf. A copyroom was added to this suite and new broadloom patterned carpeting gives this ready-to-lease suite the turnkey touch.

Through the design-build process we were able to meet the client’s leasing needs while adhering to the client’s timetable.

1. When did you start your twitter account?

September 20, 2009. (Got to love the Hub Spot guys as I had no clue where to find that.)

2. What was your biggest obstacle in twitter?

Deciding to join. I remember when this was brought up on a forum and my joke was; sure what are you supposed to do, tweet “this is my first tweet while nailing” followed up by “ouch, one shouldn’t tweet while trying to nail?” Continue reading
